From 30 April 2007 a new law will be in place to give everyone in Northern Ireland space to breathe.
From this date it is against the law to smoke in most ‘enclosed’ and ‘substantially enclosed’ workplaces and public places. This therefore applies to all the interiors of Linfield Football Club as well as all the stands.
The law requires those responsible for smoke-free premises to display no-smoking signs and to prevent or stop a person from smoking on the premises. Failure to comply may lead to a prosecution of the Club with penalties of up to £2500 for failure to prevent smoking.
Individuals may also receive a fixed penalty notice (£50) if they smoke in smoke-free premises with the maximum penalty on summary conviction of £1000. Staff and stewards will therefore have to remind you to comply within the designated areas and we would ask you to be understanding of this.
The legislation is to protect the public from the serious ill health risks of second hand smoke and should be welcomed. It is not to deny smokers the right to smoke.
