Niall Quinn programme article

Last time out at Windsor Park, reliable club servant Niall Quinn reached the significant milestone of 250 Linfield appearances when ‘The Blues’ defeated Glentoran in the ‘Big Two’ derby. ‘Look at Linfield’ has been catching up with the 26 year-old who spoke of his pride at reaching such a milestone.

“I’m over the moon to hit a milestone such as 250 appearances for this great club and I’m hopeful I can hit another 250. I certainly have my sights set on hitting 500 which may be difficult in the 3 years I have, so will have to earn myself another new deal come the end of this one.”

“I think over the years there has been so many experienced players that have had a positive impact on my game and character and that’s testament to the managers I’ve had over the years bringing the right men in to the changing room.”

Niall made his first team debut against Glentoran in April 2012 and has won two League titles, one Irish Cup, one League Cup and the County Antrim Shield twice. His opening goal in Monday night’s 3-0 win over Carrick Rangers live on Sky Sports was his 17th goal for the Club and across his 252 appearances, he has provided assists for 66 goals. When asked about his highlight so far, he chose the 2016-17 title success, when the Gibson Cup came back to Windsor Park after a four-year wait.

“I’ve so many great memories over the years such as big European nights such as Qarabag and Celtic but I think winning my first league title at Solitude, especially in the manner we won, is a moment which will be hard to top!”

“I think this year there was such a belief going into Europe with the signings we made in the summer and the preparation we made in preseason in Marbella especially really put us in good stead leading into the European ties. It was special, too.”

Looking to current affairs, Niall believes recent results following a return to domestic action offers a reason for encouragement. However, he still believes the team have a few gears to reach yet.

“We’re obviously delighted to pick up maximum points in the League games and making it into the next round of the League Cup and I know the rest of the team feel we can definitely play better in the coming fixtures. I certainly believe we can retain the title this year, especially with the squad we have and replicate the strong defensive performances which were shown in the three clean sheets against Cliftonville, Glentoran and on Monday night at Carrick in really tough conditions.”

Today’s opposition Glenavon have proved tough opponents in recent years and Quinn expects no different at Windsor Park this afternoon.

“Glenavon has always been such a difficult game for ourselves, we saw that at the tail end of last season. They were terribly unlucky against Crusaders and then went and beat a strong Ballymena team which will give them a real lift, so we will not be taking this match lightly at all.”

Congratulations to ever-consistent Niall on reaching the fine milestone of 250 appearances for the Club and best wishes to him and the team for this afternoon’s tough encounter.
