Introducing Ahmed Salam - by Jamie Megarry

Posted : 9th July 2021

Ahmed Salam is a quick winger who can play on either side and who has also played in central midfield and at left back at times in his career to date. He started out as a defensive midfielder but then moved to the left as he enjoyed getting up the pitch to cross and shoot.

The 20 year-old was born and raised in Hull but is of Egyptian descent with his parents being from Egypt. He visits Egypt every year and it’s his dream to represent their senior national team some day, having represented their u18 team.

As a young player it all started with Victoria Dock Rangers in the Hull and District Youth Football League. He then got into the Leeds United development centre and played there until he was 11. That’s when he was scouted and signed by Hull City.

After progressing through the ranks at Hull City, Ahmed earned a scholarship with the club as he progressed into the u18s, and then into the u23s before he made his first team debut in November of last year in an EFL Trophy win over Harrogate Town. He made a second appearance coming off the bench against Fleetwood Town in the same competition.

He was also on the first team bench for league fixtures a few times and trained with former Linfield midfielder Grant McCann’s first team every day.

Last year he went on loan to experience senior competitive football on a regular basis by way of a loan spell with Gainsborough Trinity in the English seventh division. Unfortunately, the pandemic cut that short and he only got to make four appearances.

In March - days after netting a hat-trick against Ipswich Town u23s - he signed a new one-year contract extension with the Tigers, who hold the option to extend it by a further year. At the time, manager Grant McCann was quoted saying: “We’re really pleased to see him sign a new deal. He’s improving and impressing all the time and trains with us every day. He’s got an excellent attitude and we like the fact he can play in a number of positions. He wants to get on the ball, wants to take people on.”

Speaking to Linfieldfc.com after signing, Ahmed said: “I am very happy to get everything sorted and now looking forward to playing games and helping the lads.

“I know Linfield are a big club in the Champions League with big expectations! I’m ready for the challenge and hopefully I can contribute with goals and assists to help the team win trophies.”
