Coming soon - new book by Linfield member on History of Windsor Park

Windsor Park has been the proud home of Linfield FC since 1905 and has hosted thousands of football games at club and international level, as well as a variety of other sports and social gatherings.

A new fully illustrated book detailing the definitive history of the ground has been compiled by local historian and Linfield member Joe Cassells. Over its 174 pages, the book describes Linfield’s previous home grounds following the club’s formation in Sandy Row in 1886 and recounts how Windsor Park was acquired and developed, the many modifications that enlarged the capacity to 60,000 in football’s golden era after World War Two, the advent of floodlighting in the 1950s, the construction of the North Stand and Kop Stand in the 1980s and 1990s, and the eventual redevelopment of the ground that was completed in 2016.

Joe references some of the famous football games played at “The Park” over its 117 year history, but also tells of the many other sports the famous ground has hosted – rugby (union and league), athletics, basketball, boxing and even motorcycle dirt-track racing.

“I’ve been coming to Linfield and international games at Windsor since 1970 and as a young boy I was fascinated by the place and its history. Nothing remains of the ground I first saw then, and I thought it was time to document its history and transformation” said Joe.

Linfield FC is delighted to support this publication and copies are expected to be on sale at the Windsor Superstore later this month, as well as online from Victor Publishing and Amazon (in large paperback format as well as Kindle download). Further details will be made available on Linfieldfc.com in due course.
