Well known supporter recalls with fondness the first game in “Waterworth Week”

Linfield tv and Linfield official media featured As Live today a truly momentous game at Solitude in which an Andrew Waterworth hat trick sealed the Irish League title three years ago on this equivalent match day Saturday.

Below are some memories from a well known supporter who was one of the unlucky ones not to have a Solitude ticket.

“I am loving the supporter perspectives of “Waterworth Week”.

Here’s another - from one of the unlucky ones who didn’t get a ticket.

I woke up early the day of the Reds game. The fact that I wasn’t able to get a ticket didn’t make me any less nervous. In fact, it probably made me worse! There was a real buzz about the Donegall Road that day. I was told that a friendly unnamed supporter would be attempting to live stream the game to a social media platform. I had also heard that one of the local pubs might try to use this and cast it onto one of their TVs.

However, after calling around the pubs and having no joy, I had all but given up of watching the game and was on my way to my Dad’s to listen to the radio with him. Just as I got to the end of his street one of the neighbours came out and asked me if I was watching the game from the live stream. After I replied ‘it didn’t look like it’ he invited me in, as he was casting the game via this live supporters stream to his TV. After grabbing my Dad, about 10 likeminded Blue men crammed into that living room on that special day to watch the game from the Linfield end with all the other 800 supporters.

The first half was nail biting. But as we took control of the game in the second half the party began in that wee house on the Donegall Road and continued up at Windsor Park watching the Champions bring the Gibson Cup home. I could not believe the 1000s who showed up at such short notice to celebrate with the team and management.

Although the whole team were rock solid. Andy Waterworth’s contribution that day made the difference. Two hat tricks in the space of a week from Andy to help us do The Double really did bring home the fact what Andy had originally said. “I came to Linfield to win trophies”.

Also, I will forever be eternally grateful the ‘that supporter’ who took the time to help his fellow Blue men, women and children not to miss that game.

Andy Waterworth, the Blue Men and women love you…..”
